Decisions, decisions, decisions...

How do you make decisions? What is your process when deciding between this or that? How do you make important choices in your life?

This exercise will help you consider what might be your patterns when it comes to decision-making and how you might improve if those patterns need some fine tuning.

Time for making a few brief notes. Write your answers to these questions, leaving some room after each decision for additional notes.

  • What are 5 decisions you have made that you are most proud of?

  • What are 5 decisions you have made that you are less than proud of?

  • What are 5 decisions you have made that turned out ok, but if you had the chance to make a different decision you would?

Now, go back and write by each decision why you made it. Was it on a whim? Peer pressure? Well thought-out? Based purely on emotion? Backed into a corner?

Once you have finished, look at this exercise as a whole. Do you see any patterns? Is there a common thread in your decision-making abilities? Do you make decisions based on emotion or based on a well-thought-out plan? If you begin to recognize a pattern you aren't thrilled with, you have the power to change it.

If you realize you make important decisions on a whim, the next time you have an important one to make, come back to this list and remind yourself of the value of taking time in the decision-making process. You can also consult a trusted mature friend or family member to gain a different perspective. Taking time to make good solid decisions takes practice. The more you consider how to go about it thoughtfully the better the outcome will be.
