Perception Repatterning Technique utilizes these valuable components:

Cross Pattern Movements: By activating both sides of the body simultaneously,

the left & right hemispheres of the brain communicate evenly. Whole-brain balance is furthered by engaging back and front, top and bottom movements, allowing for whole-brain integration. This readies the person for accepting new learning.


Emotional Stress Release: Lightly holding of the frontal eminence – the slight bony

protuberance on the forehead - directly above the eyes and below the hairline. Stress is reduced when blood flow is increased in the frontal cortex, thereby releasing the brain’s

fight/flight reaction and facilitating clarity and conscious choice. Many modalities of body/mind work recognize this procedure as calming and effective for relieving stress.

Emotional Finger Mode: Involves holding of the thumb and third (ring) fingers together. The remaining two fingers (index and middle) are then placed on the forehead at the Emotional Stress Release points. This comes from the work of Dr. Alan Beardall, the originator of the concept of the body as a “bio-computer”. Dr. Beardall recognized that the thumb and fingers had energy flows similar to the energy flows of the acupuncture meridian system itself. Through extensive research, he found that these “hand modes” represented another form of readout on the essential functions within the body.


Eye Rotations: Rotating the eyes in a complete circle, first in one direction and then in the opposite direction. The eyes may circle more than once in each direction, the key being to notice where there may be any difficulty in movement. Lingering in the area of difficulty until it eases creates a smooth flow. This technique is derived from Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). The rotating of the eyes accesses the pathways to stored memories and memory patterns that can be released and replaced.


Affirmations: This is where the listening skill of the trained PRT counselor plays a crucial role in the release of the stored trauma. Negative perceptions are identified and statements are then uniquely created to undo previously held beliefs. Since the word “feel” denotes experience, these statements or affirmations are made with the words “I no longer feel” or “I feel” preceding the perceptions that have been formulated. The felt sense of the experience resonates within the limbic system (part of the brain involved in processing emotion and memory) as though it were a reality. This is where the major shifts occur. And since we usually trust the sound of our own voice, saying the words out loud helps to access the unconscious mind faster than merely thinking them silently to ourselves.

Visualization: Focusing on a new outcome based upon the positive affirmations also allows the mind to supplant the old memories and to experience the benefits of new possibilities.


Repetition: To give the mind enough time to permanently lodge the new perceptions, it is most effective to process the affirmations for at least 21 days.


The Steps:


  1. Sit or lie comfortably, clearing your mind.

  2. Holding the fingers together in the emotional finger mode, place the

  3. index and middle fingers on the forehead at the emotional stress release points.

  4. Say the affirmations out loud (low undertones are fine).

  5. As the affirmations are being said, rotate the eyes circularly at least once in each direction, making sure movement is smooth.


To give the mind enough repetition to permanently lodge the new perceptions, it has proven effective to continue to process the statements for at least 21 days. Statistically, it takes between 21 to 28 days to make or break a new habit.
